David Green, Consultant, Meditation Teacher and Author of The Big Secret of How to find Happy Meaningful Success, shares his wellbeing essentials with us.

My main asset in life has been common sense, so I apply it constantly. We’ve two main choices in life - to be in our own power and take responsibility or allow others and circumstances to control us. I've been there: stressed out, burnt out, personal problems - the lot. Staring down from the edge of the precipice. From bond trading to being a young entrepreneur and later, spending 300 days in silence. Many turning points. Change isn’t comfortable. How or where to begin is the hardest part. I had one advantage for which I’m ever grateful - Faith and Belief. I was told as a child, I could have whatever I wanted if I wanted it enough. I believed it 110%.
When I set up my business at 23, the ‘professionals’ told me I would fail. I ignored them, luckily. The secret to success is to know who to ask for advice, who to ignore and who to listen to - even if the truth is painful. Our minds are full of thoughts. Many are negative, most are repetitive. We don’t need other people’s as well as our own! Meditation arrived at the height of my career, like a magic pill. I’ve practised every day for 30 years. If it worked for a non-believer like me, it can work for you. By taking a time-out each day for a few minutes - anchoring in the flow of the moment - feeling the life-force in every breath - we bring peace to the mind.
We eat through our eyes, ears and mouth! So, for a healthy diet, we need to be mindful of what we’re eating - through our senses and not just our mouths. I’ve been vegan for 30 years. Touch wood, I feel great and on most days… especially Halloween, I look great! 😊 But, even vegans can put on the kilos, especially when dark chocolate vegan cake insists I eat it when having a cuppa at Cobo Tearooms. One tip I received on being vegan is to eat protein with each meal, and I follow Ayurvedic principles - for instance never drinking water during or after a meal to help digestion etc. Lastly, I’m grateful for the food on my plate.
I’m fascinated by what's behind life - what makes us tick. One practice that helps me when I’m a bit low, is being the witness to the thoughts. When I realise that I am not the thoughts, in time they dissipate. There's an old expression: 'the past is dead, with your two eyes look straight ahead'. I keep this in mind if my attitude plays up. My positive attitude today will create a positive tomorrow. The Bhagavad Gita tells us: 'A doubting person is always in trouble'.
I love writing - as you can see by the long paragraphs! In my recently released book, The Big Secret of How to find Happy Meaningful Success, I ask the reader 'When did you last take a Selfie of Truth?' To do this we have to stop, pause and be honest. To realise that happiness is in our hands and comes from inside. I constantly monitor my happiness and surround myself with positive friends and loved ones where the door of love is fully open. How about you?
