Things To Do This Bank Holiday Weekend (& Half Term)

There’s lots going on this May bank holiday and half term week, and we’re here to help you make the most of the break. Whether you’ve got children to keep busy or you’re carving out a little time for yourself, there’s something on our list to suit every mood.

From exhibitions and creative activities to sea swims and solo dates, we’re sure you'll find something that ticks the right box for you.

1.  Lost in Nature

The 'Lost in Nature' exhibition invites you to slow down and reconnect with the natural world through the power of art at The Museum at Candie Gardens.  Throughout half term week, the exhibition will also include a self-led wellbeing walking guide, created in collaboration with Guernsey Trees for Life, which explores Candie Gardens. Admission is free with a Discovery Pass. Find out more here.

2.  Me-Time

Take a moment for yourself. Take an hour out to browse the stalls at this Farmer's Market or Plant Sale. Book a beauty treatment or go all out with a spa day at The OGH or St Pierre Park. Plan a solo date. Doing things alone may push you out of your comfort zone, but that’s no bad thing. Here are some ideas to get you started.

3.  Well-Geeking Week

Well-Geeking week is taking place during May half term to showcase hobbies and pastimes that enhance our sense of wellbeing. Visitors of all ages can take part in activities and events, culminating in The Big Geekend (on 30 & 31 May) with a two-day celebration of quirky collections and unique interests. Find out more here.

4.  Creative Activities

The crafting community is having a moment, so unplug and do something creative. From life drawing and pottery throwing to candle making and crochet there are lots of activities to choose from. Guernsey Arts keeps an updated list of workshops and classes to browse for inspiration, with a wide range of activities on offer from designing & printing to jewellery making. There’s something for all ages.

5.  Sea Swimming

The water is slowly but surely warming up and, weather permitting, we're spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful places to swim around the islands. But with so much choice it can be difficult to know which spot to choose. Some bays are great for a high tide swim, whilst some work better at low tide. Some places are stunning at dawn and others are ideal to take in the setting sun. Whatever your preference, this list will help you find the perfect spot.

6.  Outdoor Adventures

Wrap up and embrace the fresh air. Whether you prefer walking or cycling, there are endless ways to explore our islands. Even if you’ve lived here all your life, there’s always a hidden corner to discover. If you're looking for an organised cycling event, take part in Rock to Rocque in support of Les Bourgs. If you feel like going further afield, take a boat trip to Herm for the day or book a place at The Captain's Table. There's also a Spring Walking event in Sark or the Sark 10 running event.

7.  Music, Culture and Arts

Guernsey Arts keeps a calendar of concerts, gigs, exhibitions, theatre performances and community events happening across the Bailiwick. Keep an eye on their listings for live performances and creative inspiration. St James also delivers a rolling programme of events, from comedy evenings to Motown nights. You’ll find details of their listings here.

8.  Family Fun

Keeping the little ones entertained on rainy days can be challenging - unless you know where to look! Oaty and Joey’s Playbarn and Le Friquet Garden Centre both have soft play areas and, if the weather is fine there’s always the pirate playground at Saumarez Park. For older kids, try crazy golf at Nineteen or indoor fun Iris and Dora. You can also stock up on materials for all ages at Craftwise or Creaseys Kids and get creative at home.

9.  Eating Out

Make plans to leave the cooking to someone else and enjoy a meal out. Whether it’s a relaxed brunch with friends, a catch-up over coffee and cake or special dinner plans, there are plenty of welcoming spots around the island ready to host you. Combining a family-friendly early supper with a trip to The Mallard Cinema is another easy win during half term - especially with a Bargain Wednesday ticket for just £3.50.
